A variety of federal and state regulations govern emissions from water resource recovery facilities (ie, 1990 Clean Air Act, 42 U.S.C. § 7401), which is applicable to volatile organic compounds and hazardous air pollutants. This regulation, however, is related to air quality and does not regulate odors. Odors are typically controlled through state or local ordinance(s) or codes, such as nuisance odor regulations. Far more important is the community perception of biosolids odors.
