Research shows that biosolids help soils to store more carbon; this helps us to fight climate change by keeping carbon in the soil rather than the atmosphere. There are two primary reasons why this works.

  1. Some of the carbon in the biosolids stays in the soil for a very long time.
  2. Adding biosolids to soils helps plants grow bigger and faster, which means those plants are pulling more carbon out of the atmosphere via photosynthesis. Also, these bigger, faster-growing plants are dropping more organic matter into the soil from their leaves and roots, helping to store even more carbon in the soil.
