Research shows that biosolids help soils to store more carbon; this helps us to fight climate change by keeping carbon in the soil rather than the atmosphere. There are two primary reasons why this works.
- Some of the carbon in the biosolids stays in the soil for a very long time.
- Adding biosolids to soils helps plants grow bigger and faster, which means those plants are pulling more carbon out of the atmosphere via photosynthesis. Also, these bigger, faster-growing plants are dropping more organic matter into the soil from their leaves and roots, helping to store even more carbon in the soil.
