When farmers and gardeners use biosolids, they are typically using it instead of synthetic fertilizer, and therefore reducing our reliance on those fossil fuel intensive resources. The climate impacts of making nitrogen fertilizer and mining phosphorus are enormous (almost a quarter of a gallon of fossil fuel is needed for every pound of inorganic nitrogen produced), so avoiding their use also avoids the emissions associated with them.
